FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (Apr. 9, 2010) - The Nova Southeastern softball team (35-13, 12-4 SSC) dropped their second home game of the season Friday night, losing to the Barry Buccaneers (26-17, 8-5 SSC), 8-5.
The Sharks were only able to tally three hits against the Buccaneers, but drew a season-high nine walks. Patty Rivero (Sr., Miami, Fla.), Jessica Hernandez (Sr., Miami, Fla.), and Brittney Lamb (Sr., West Palm Beach, Fla.) each had a hit.
Barry took the lead in the second inning by scoring two runs. The Bucs would increase NSU's hole with three more in the fourth. With Dani Caron (Sr., Wellington, Fla.) on first base, Lamb earned her team's first hit. She turned towards second to bait the throw and Caron was able to score.
The Sharks allowed another three runs in the fifth, putting them in a seven run hole. The Bucs were close to earning an early win in the fifth but Rachel Talenfeld (Jr., Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) made a clutch throw to catcher Stephanie Pallazolo (Fr., New Port Richey, Fla.) at home plate to tag the final out of the side.
The Sharks sparked a rally in the sixth inning and cut the deficit to three runs. Lauren Lopez (Sr., Miami, Fla.) and Hernandez kicked off the frame with a walk and a single. After both were put in scoring position off of an illegal pitch, Lopez score off of a groundout form Caron.
Dana Bergner (Sr., Palm Harbor, Fla.) followed up with a walk and Sarah Hart (Jr., Newburgh, Ind.) reached on a fielder's choice. Hernandez was able to score off an error before Rivero hit her second triple of the season to score two more runs. The Bucs retired four out of the next five Shark batters to seal the victory.
After nearly five innings of play and eight runs allowed, Caron was entered the circle and pitched well. Over 2.1 innings, Caron held the Bucs to no runs and two hits. Caron did not walk a single batter and struck out two Buccaneers.
The Sharks will continue their three-game series against the Bucs Saturday at 1 pm.
